Check after 24 hours. Houston summer heat evaporates roughly ¼ to ½ inch per day. If the pool dropped meaningfully more than the bucket, you have a leak.

Over time, this movement cracks gunite shells at the waterline tile, stresses skimmer connections, and fractures underground plumbing lines.
